PRACTICE SMASHING THE CAKE

1st birthday cake smash sessions can be so much fun, whether you choose the classic set up with a simple banner, balloons or floral garland or whether you go all out on a themed session such as The Hungry Caterpillar or Winnie The Pooh we are certainly going to capture some great memories.

It is important to prepare for these cake smash sessions before your session. Although you probably think we just simply place the cake in front of the little one and they dig in, smashing and enjoying themselves, this can sometimes not be the case. They can be shy and not quite sure of what to do, they can be unwilling to touch the cake and not want to get messy. Although these can also make great pictures for a fuller session it is always best to practice beforehand.

I recommend purchasing a cupcake to practice with, let your little one play with the frosting getting to know the texture and the sweet taste. This may be some babies fist time trying something so sweet and, at first, they may not like the squishy feeling between their little fingers. Let them keep playing, if they really do not like the frosting you may want to order a cake with whipped cream for your actual session! The more they play, the more likely they will be to dig in and smash at their photo session.
